INTERWOVEN
INTERWOVEN is a chamber ensemble whose mission is to bring together the sounds from different places and time. The ensemble name derives from the idea that music making is like creating a tapestry, woven together with threads that represent and celebrate diverse origins, traditions and materials.
About
Pioneers of intercultural music that brings together historic sonorities of Eastern Asia and Western Europe, INTERWOVEN is currently in its fifth season as a chamber ensemble. Taking inspiration from its birthplace New York City, where countless cultures coexist and thrive, INTERWOVEN celebrates and integrates traditions, aesthetics and communities that originate from various heritages through performing, commissioning, and recording contemporary music.
The ensemble made its debut in 2021 at the DiMenna Center for Classical Music in New York City, with the funding from the City Artist Corps Grant. The group has since appeared in venues such as Smithsonian National Museum of Asian Art, Metropolitan Museum in New York City, Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, Roulette Intermedium in Brooklyn and Vancouver Civic Centre Annex, among others. INTERWOVEN has served as a guest artist at schools like UCLA, Longy School of Music in Massachusetts, University of Kansas, Toronto University and Colby College in Maine, working closely with composition and instrumental departments of the school.
The group was awarded two major fundings in 2023 from Lower Manhattan Cultural Council as well as Canada Council For the Arts for their original community-focused project, FantAsia!, in Washington Heights, NY– a neighborhood with the smallest Asian representation in the borough of Manhattan.
